Product Review

Drinks with the Totterings brings together a superb collection of Annie Tempest's 'Tottering-by-Gently' cartoons around the theme of wine and drinking, which encompasses inter-generational tensions, the differing perspectives of men and women and more. Tottering-by-Gently is a village in the fictional county of North Pimmshire, where Lord and Lady Tottering reside in the fading grandeur of their ancestral home, Tottering Hall. Annie Tempest's cartoons are based on Lord and Lady Tottering (Dicky and Daffy) and their extended family. Her now international following proves that she touches a note of universal truth in her exquisitely detailed and beautifully executed cartoons as she gently laughs with us at the stuff of life. Includes an Introduction by Simon Berry, Chairman of Berry Bros & Rudd, founded in the 17th century, Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant.

Dicky considers himself an expert on fine wines (though his conversations with a taste of a good red make his wife, listening through the door, think he is talking to a woman!) There is an continuing problem with bottle disposal and recycling....which glass bin does a quality Moet bottle go in, after all? The illustration of Dicky the morning after the night before is hilarious. And so is the opinions of their cleaning lady on a new french wine. I always enjoy Dicky and Daffy, despite her resolve that while it is NOT proper anymore, she is still going to smoke (with a cigarette holder too!) and drink. And she's willing to eat in the alley or send guests who don't like it out in the rain with umbrellas. It's all done with wonderful artistry, the backgrounds so realistic that the cartoon...Read more
