Lotus blossoms, graceful bamboos, pools filled with silvery fish: an expansive garden lures guests from a grand house to rest in the shade of a palm tree or linger on the shore of an artificial lake. These twelve paintings, the work of an unknown artist from the reign of the Qianlong emperor (1736-1795), convey the leisure world of Beijing's wealthiest men and women at the height of the Qing dynasty.
