Product Review

Paper-folding fun every day from "Origami Swami" Margaret Van Sicklen, author of The Joy of Origami. Includes detailed instructions and illustrations for hundreds of models; the perfectly square, colorful patterned pages double as folding paper. The only calendar endorsed by Origami USA.

I have enjoyed several of these origami calendars but have not specifically perused this 2011 calendar yet, although I bought several from Amazon (to give friends). Margaret Van Sicklen has created a virtual course in origami, emphasizing the many "bases" used to make other models. She includes boxes, modular origami and some dollar bill models. This is not for the advanced folder, but will keep perpetual beginners such as myself (and I own at least 40 books on origami) busy for, well, at least a year.
I would not plan to use this as a calendar. Just enjoy the diagrams and the papers and get to work doing origami. The paper is of surprisingly good quality, with varied colored patterns that take advantage of the models. At 12 bucks or so, it's an origami bargain!

I have had Origami Page a Day calendars in the past, so was looking forward to this one, but it was a big disappointment. The paper is very flimsy, unlike earlier versions which were backed by a solid shiny surface, much better for folding the next day's origami. This year's paper also is patterned, not a problem in itself, but along one side in a fairly large font is the web address for page a day calendars. With some folds this will show. I have also been disappointed with the difficulty level of the folds. So far (in February) they are very basic and except for one heart ("kimono heart") have all been ones I already knew. Also, at least 2 of the weekend pages so far (Sat & Sun are on one page) have not had folds at all but instead a little factoid about origami or a "joke". I didn't buy the calendar for that sort of thing. Based on this year's version I don't think I will be buying more in the future.

I was so excited about this calendar, but the directions for folding are on the page that you are folding. I would suggest skipping a day and use that page to do the next days origami so that you can see the directions while folding. The colored pages are pretty and have nice patterns - however each one of them has this text running the length of the side of the page: PAGE A-DAY CALENDAR | [...] | WORKMAN PUBLISHING
Its advertising on each one of your 365 pages.
I would not buy this calendar again. I got my hubby a paper airplane calendar and the graphics are great and the directions get cut off the top of each page. No advertising on any of the graphics.
