Product Review

Between 1916 and 1963, Norman Rockwell created a sunny, gentle, almost carefree version of America on some three hundred covers of The Saturday Evening Post. Inside the magazine were many stories he illustrated and many advertisements he drew. The kindly one-town nation he celebrated was internalized by The Post ’s readers, who saw Rockwell’s pictures and reacted with the words That’s us! Immensely popular in his own time and beyond, collected by some of the most famous names in American popular culture, Rockwell (1894–1978) long ago attained the status of an icon. The Partygoers (Couple with Milkman), The Full Treatment, Rosie the Riveter, and Santa’s Helpers are among the twelve Post covers reproduced here.

Norman Rockwell is great, but his paintings and posters have been reproduced probably more than those of any other American artist. So, in putting together this calendar, the publisher chose mostly less familiar paintings. Nothing wrong with that; the "Freedom from Want" picture, wonderful as it is, has become a bit tiresome as an illustration of Thanksgiving. So, while these paintings are fine, there is a reason why many of them aren't reproduced that often. Admittedly, the publisher is caught in a dilemma -- use the better known, but overly familiar paintings, or the lesser known, but not quite as good paintings. In the end, though, Rockwell is Rockwell and even his lesser work is quite good.

Norman Rockwell is an outstanding artist who captures many moments from the 1950s. Some of his photographs can make one laugh. Others are patriotic but all are beautifully illustrated in this calendar. My elderly uncle loved it.
