With an annual visitorship exceeding 100,000, the Mütter Museum has become America's most popular medical museum. Featured on the Discovery channel and The Late Show with David Letterman, the Mütter Museum's collection originated more than 150 years ago with Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter, a 19th-century Philadelphia surgeon who collected unique anatomic and pathological materials for his personal teaching "museum": bones; air-dried, varnished anatomic specimens; plaster casts; fluid-preserved specimens; wax and papier-mâché models; and oil and watercolor paintings. The collection grew to include such oddities as the death cast and connected livers of the legendary Siamese twins Chang and Eng, the skeleton of a 7' 6" giant, and Dr. Chevalier Jackson's collection of more than 2,000 swallowed objects removed from the throats and airways of his patients. The eleventh in this highly regarded series, the Mütter Museum 2012 Calendar presents 12 new images of the museum's fascinating collection by a renowned group of photographers who have turned their attention to the unexpected art inherent in the study of medical science.

It's definitely a calendar for macabre tastes, which is why I like it. The photography is well done and the months are chock full of medical facts that the lay person is probably unaware of. This is a good introduction to the wonders that await at the Mutter Museum. Now I have to get myself out to Philadelphia and visit it.

This wall calendar is full of ghoulish and grotesque natural apecimens of deceased humans. This is done in a scientific and not sensationalistic way. The daily anniversaries are also fascinating. It's been on my wall every year since 1999.
