3.0 out of 5 stars Crosswords offer good challenge, but are a little too repetitious., January 21, 2011

I like this calendar alright - it gets the job done (which is to say, it tells me the date with as much accuracy as I have memory to tear pages off). However, I was disappointed with the quality of the crosswords. perhaps I am just too used to getting my butt kicked by the NY Times puzzle, but it seems like this calendar reuses clues with a surprising amount of frequency. For example (Spoiler alert for you crossword solvers out there), Shoot-em-up (solution OATER) was a clue two days in a row, and ____ Plaines, IL (Solution DES) was as well. I don't mind some repetition, and I understand that remembering clues and types of words over time is the way to get good at crosswords, but I wish they spaced out the repetition a little bit more. It felt like cheating (but only a little less than actual cheating, which I sometimes succumb to). I sort of wish I had picked up the NYtimes page a day. At least then when I cheat at crosswords, I will feel a little more justified. (note - I...Read more

I love the little puzzles in this calendar! I enjoy the humorous themes and I learn a lot of fun trivia. I keep it in the bathroom and now I can't live without it, if you know what I mean. . . The weekday puzzles take me ten minutes or less, and the weekend solvers are a little more challenging, which I like, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars quick, well-constructed puzzles, March 11, 2011

Buying a collection of puzzles by an unknown author/editor, I was concerned that (a) they'd use obscure words that one never hears/reads/thinks about in real life; (b) they'd be way too hard, or (c) they'd be easy and unsatisfying -- more busy-work than fun. Happily, none of these are the problem. The puzzles are well-constructed, and are on the quick&easy side -- most are a Monday-to-Tuesday on the nyTimes scale. So about a third of the words get filled in right away if there is a cross-letter, and a third of the words are filled in on a second pass once a few more letters are there. However, Fred Piscop's clues are definitely fun, so that even the words you get immediately are still satisfying (as opposed to busy-work). Some typical examples:
_ _ _ _ : A bad way to run;
_ _ _ _ _ : Sparing of words;
_ P _ E : Pointless olympic sport?
Have answers of [mini-spoiler:] "amok", "terse", and "epee" resp.

Some weekend puzzles are by people other...Read more
