Product Description
By the beginning of the seventeenth century, increased interest in gardening and the science of botany had given rise to a new type of book, the florilegium (Latin, a gathering of flowers ). These collections of botanical illustrations, more artistic than scientific, emphasized the flowers beauty. The paintings reproduced here were commissioned by French nobleman Jean le Roy de la Boissière in 1608. Rendered in watercolor, ink, silver, and gold laid over traces of graphite on vellum sheets, the illustrations are as vibrant today as when they were created, more than four centuries ago.
