Wonderful college search tool,

This review is from: College Handbook 2012 (College Board College Handbook) (Paperback)
This book is the best college search tool for high school students out there. The editors did a wonderful job collecting and verifying the data that is presented in this giant book. It lists important information: admissions criteria and dates, financial aid information and dates, sports, housing, enrollment numbers, location type (urban, suburban, etc), acceptance rates, graduation rates, accreditation, SAT/ACT requirements, tuition, majors (and most popular majors), student services and so much more! The data all comes directly from the various institutions and the government, so it is extremely accurate. Other publishers collect their information from various websites and are for-profit. The College Board is non-profit. However, I would recommend checking with the schools directly regarding important deadlines. Every guidance counselor and high school student should have this book!

Good place to start the college search process,

"College Handbook 2012" (2291 pages) is one massive book. They should sell it by the pound! The premise of the book is quite simple: provide a short overview of the 2000+ 4 year colleges and the 1700+ 2 year colleges that grace our country. At that it succeeds, mostly. Most informative is the "freshman class profile" which includes (for most colleges) the key information of how many applicants, how many were admitted, and how many actually enrolled. It also includes the all-important tuition and room + board fees, but beware, those numbers are generally 1 or 2 years old, and so if you are looking at starting college in, say, Fall of 2012, these numbers are already outdated.
Because of the (literally) enormous size of this book, this is not particulary user-friendly. It's just HUGE. But it's a good starting point, up to a degree, simply to get a lay of the land of colleges. If your son or daughter simply wants to know what colleges are out there in his or her state (since...Read more

This is my fourth time through this process. I wouldn't even begin without this book. A book this size may be intimidating for your student, but if you dig in, you'll find a wealth of information. I've purchased just about every college book around and this is still the best one to get you through the process.
