William S. Rice Arts & Crafts Block Prints Wall Calendar: While teaching art in northern California, woodblock printer William Seltzer Rice (1873 â?? 1963) was thunderstruck by the Japanese woodblock prints he saw at San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exhibition. Incorporating elements of this genre with the Arts and Crafts aesthetic, he adopted a new style that blended strong outlines and clean compositions with gently modulated colors. The twelve images in this calendar, among them Sierra Winter, Single Camellias, Windblown Cypress, Grosbeaks, and Sunset Glow Mt. Shasta, are from the book William S. Rice: California Block Prints, by Roberta Rice Treseder (Pomegranate, 2009).

Summary: Very pretty calendar! Just right for Arts & Crafts fans 2009-11-28
Comment: Our house is decorated largely in an Arts & Crafts theme, from stained glass to handmade wood items and textiles. This calendar fits right in. The block prints are all nature inspired, with pictures that range from California redwoods to a bowl of camellia. Most of the prints are in earth tones, the colors you expect from 1900-1915, including plenty of soft, muted gold, green, and brown.
I've been getting calendars from Pomegranate for several years, and they've always been high quality. They also do a good job at being a calendar, with readable dates, plenty of room for scribbling in "Mom's birthday!" and an international awareness of holidays (such as Victoria Day, Canada).
